About Jurgen Otto
The exhibition’s colourful feature photograph of the leopard-spotted Maratus pardus from Western Australia was contributed by Sydney biologist Jurgen Otto who is well known for his photographs and videos of peacock spiders and widely credited with making them famous around the world, even introducing David Attenborough to them. Together with his long-time collaborator David Hill he named most of the 79 known species, and documented their morphology, colour patterns, development and behaviour in a series of 32 exquisitely illustrated publications that can be freely downloaded. Since 2005, the year he came across his first peacock spider in bush land near Sydney 2005 Jurgen spent thousands hours, all in his spare time, on the documentation of these iconic and charismatic creatures.
